Day 32 - Highs and Lows

We are enjoying sharing the process of building our house with you and introducing you to some of our Hill Country friends - both human and the four-legged kind.  In any type of relationship there are ups and downs, good days and bad days.  Today was a day of extreme ups and one serious low.  More about the nature of friendships later - on to the house!!!

Early this morning the framing crew arrived and started cutting open the bundles of lumber to start framing the house.   After all of our planning, we can't believe this day is finally here.  Thanks to Melinda for getting a shot of the work getting started.

Unwrapping the Lumber
The crew snapped chalk lines on the foundation to delineate walls, doorways, and other features.  It is so much fun to walk around in our "rooms."
Pocket Door into Bruce's study
The crew assembled the walls flat on the slab and then raised them up to place them on the foundation.

We weren't at the house site when the work started this morning, but stopped by on our way back from lunch with friends, Dan and Jane, in Blanco.  After lunch, Dan and Jane graciously showed us their beautiful home and property in Blanco.  It was loads of fun learning about their experiences and picking up some great tips to help us in our process.  They have a gorgeous pool that really got our minds working about the design of our pool.  Here are some shots of house progress when we stopped by in the early afternoon.

We went back to our apartment to take care of some things and when we returned around 5:30pm, lots of progress had been made on the master bedroom suite of rooms.

We are amazed how fast the walls are going up and are thrilled to be seeing our plans take on three dimensions.  There is still a lot of framing to be done and we will be there every day to check it out.

FURRY FRIEND OF THE DAY - R.I.P Tar Baby

One of our first furry friends in the Hill Country was a sleek, inquisitive feral cat that we named Tar Baby after a story in Songs of the South.  Tar Baby was a frequent visitor on our patio and loved to watch us through the patio door.  He wouldn't let us get too close to the glass and would scoot way quickly if we invaded his personal space.  But he loved to curl up in a chair or a flowerpot and hang out in the afternoon.  He provided us with many hours of amusement over the last year for the small price of some Meow Mix, fresh water, and a box with warm blankets.

Sadly, we found Tar Baby killed on the busy street side this morning.  Feral cats have short life spans and we will miss our furry friend.
